Yes, I know that it is January 3rd right now. To my credit, it seems like the 2nd because it's only been the 3rd for a little over an hour. Who cares, the year is still new and mostly unspoiled.
Today I spent some time helping my brother Jarom with a home improvement project. He was installing a ceiling fan and needed my help running some electrical wire. So I went over, squeezed into tight places, and we did the job. He mentioned how the new year really can inspire, and in all reality it is true. As much as people (myself included) try to make the new year mean nothing, it does. The last number you write when jotting down the date changed. Who hoo. It's just arbitrary and was created by humans and thus pointless, just like birthdays.
" 'Day' is a vestigial mode of time measurement, based on solar cycles. It's not applicable. [pauses] I didn't get you anything." - River on Firefly
But in all reality, it does mean something to most people. 'New Year's Resolutions' are made by many people. Not everyone follows through however, so the idea has been viewed with disdain by some. I say, as long as something is meant to do good, it is a good thing. Here is a list of some of the most popular resolutions according to this web site: http://www.firstgov.gov/Citizen/Topics/New_Years_Resolutions.shtml
Pay Off Debt
Get a Better Job
Get a Better Education
Drink Less Alcohol
Quit Smoking Now
Reduce Stress Overall
Reduce Stress at Work
Take a Trip
Volunteer to Help Others
Are any of these things bad? No. If people did these things we would be a better, happier, healthier people. In that case, in general, New Year's Resolutions are good things. Not to be looked down on. Sure it can be hard to keep your resolutions, but sometimes you just have to stick it to yourself to get it done. My brother's resolution has apparently been to do some home improvement, a worthy goal. He cut a hole in his ceiling so that he would be forced to do something about it. He chose to install a ceiling fan. Well done.
So, the moment you've all been waiting for. My resolutions?
Get a job. Sure that seems basic... but I've been unemployed for near two months now. I gotta get on it. Buy a new car. One of these days I will blog about my car.... for posterity of course. Do more stuff. I waste too much time not doing stuff, and it's just not cool. Of course by this I mean get out hiking more, climbing more, whatever. I've gotten weaker over the past little while due to inactivity, so doing more stuff should remedy it. Read more. I already have been, but I'll throw it in for kicks. In the past little while I read 'Touching the Void' and 'The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe'. I've decided reading is more fun than I had originally thought, hence I will read more. I'm currently reading 'The Hobbit'. Learn more. Hopefully I can resume my college education next fall, but until then I'll do what I can. I plan on taking Institute even though I can't afford school. Meet more people. Preferably of the female persuasion, if you catch my drift. iPod I will own an iPod this year.
